Nicole C. Mullen sings her powerful worship song ‘Redeemer’ to inspire millions facing hard trials.
Nicole wrote it during a very dark time in her life while dealing with personal heartache and painful struggles. She turned to the Old Testament book of Job where a hurting man lost everything but still declared that his Redeemer lives. The song lyrics beautifully tell about the authority and power of our God. Nicole C. Mullen grew up in a traditional home in Cincinnati Ohio where music and church were a huge part of everyday life. She started singing as a young child and eventually worked her way up as a backup singer and writer for popular Christian musicians.
Over the years she wrote huge gospel tracks including the hit song On My Knees for singer Jaci Velasquez. Then in the year 2000 she released her own song Redeemer on her self titled album. It quickly touched believers across the country and won Song of the Year at the 2001 GMA Dove Awards.
Nicole actually became the first African American woman to win Songwriter of the Year at that ceremony which was a massive achievement for gospel music history.
When I watch her live performance of Redeemer I get goosebumps every single time she sings. Her voice starts out gentle and sweet then builds into a grand worship anthem that fills the room with praise.
I honestly felt tears in my eyes because you can tell she isn’t just singing lyrics off a page. She truly knows the Lord she is praising and has lived through His mercy. As we face our own hard days this performance reminds us that Jesus is alive and holding us in His hands.
