When a Phoenix father lost his entire paycheck to a phone scam right before his toddler’s birthday two police officers decided a standard police report just wasn’t going to be enough.

We hear about phone scams all the time but it hits differently when it takes everything a family has left.
Officers Alessandro Figuccio and Tanner Schnieder from the Cactus Park Precinct responded to a call that broke the usual routine. A man who worked for DoorDash had been tricked by a caller claiming his account was deactivated. The scammer told him to enter a code at a kiosk and just like that his last paycheck was gone.
The officers arrived to find a father who had just paid his rent and car payment. He had absolutely nothing left for his daughter who was turning two years old the very next day. He started to break down in front of them.
Schnieder noticed the little girl sitting right there in her high chair eating. He said “And I look in and I see his daughter, and then it hits me.”
It is hard to imagine the quiet panic of a parent in that exact moment. You look at your kid and realize you have absolutely nothing to give them for their birthday.
Going Above and Beyond for a Father in Need
Schnieder took the lead and offered a solution. He asked the father “do you want to follow us to a store and I can get your daughter some stuff and say it’s from you”. He wanted to make sure the dad knew he was supported telling him “i don’t want you to feel like you’re alone in this cuz you’re not”.
The father sent over a few specific things he wanted for his daughter and the two police officers headed to a local store. They found exactly what he asked for including clothes in size 3T and grabbed some toys.
They could have just bought those requested items and called it a day. Most of us would probably feel like we had done our good deed right there. But the officers decided to go rogue and kept looking. They spotted a small pink bicycle with tassels. They knew she was a little too young to ride it right now but they figured it would be cool for the dad to teach her when she gets older. They paid for everything out of their own pockets.
When they brought the gifts back to the house the father looked down and saw the pink bike. He immediately started to get emotional. In the body camera footage he asks the officers “I am going to cry… Can I give you guys a hug?”
Figuccio later mentioned that the gesture was rewarding especially knowing the man had no money left. Schnieder shared that his own family had faced difficult positions before so he just wanted to help someone who needed it.
God Provides
God saw the silent, desperate panic of a heartbroken father who thought he had failed his little girl. And what did He do? He didn’t just send a quick fix; He sent two compassionate police officers to abundantly provide.
This story reminds me of the widow of Zarephath in the Bible. She thought she was entirely out of resources, scraping the very bottom of the barrel, but God sent prophet Elijah to her doorstep to make sure her household was fed.
If you are sitting there right now feeling completely drained, wondering how you are going to make ends meet or provide for your family this week, hold on. God sees the empty bank account. He sees the heavy burden you are carrying. Don’t let the enemy convince you that you are forgotten. Keep trusting, keep praying, and watch how the Lord provides exactly what you need, right when you need it.
Beware of Scammers
Sadly, this father’s story is happening all over the country every single day. Recent polls show that nearly 60 percent of Americans are targeted by scam calls, texts, or emails on a daily basis. Scammers are getting smarter, using fake company names and creating high-pressure situations to steal hard-earned money. We need to be vigilant and protect our households.
Here are a few simple ways you can guard yourself:
- Never give out personal or financial information to someone who calls or texts you out of the blue, even if the caller ID looks legitimate.
- If a caller claims there is an emergency with your bank, a company account or your tax account, hang up immediately and call the official customer service number listed on the company’s official website.
- Do not click on links in unexpected text messages or emails claiming your account is locked, you missed a delivery or you’ve won a prize.
- Remember that no legitimate business or government agency will demand payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency kiosk, or ask for your card details in an unexpected call, text or email.
