Jessica Sanchez won America’s Got Talent Season 20, and she says her faith in Jesus Christ carried her through it all.
From Child Star to AGT Champion
The 29-year-old singer first appeared on AGT at age 10 during the show’s first season in 2006. She later became runner-up on American Idol in 2012. But she stepped away from the spotlight for what she described as a “spiritual reset.”
“I kind of got lost in the sauce of it all,” she said. “You see the glitz and glam of the Grammys, the beautiful things, and you think, ‘That’s what I want.’ But I realized there was more depth the Lord wanted me to find.”
Sanchez Finds Her Identity in Christ
During her time away, she found something more valuable than any trophy. She built a personal relationship with God. She built what she calls a firm foundation of faith.
“Now my foundation is firm,” she said. “It’s not just about gifts and talents or other people’s opinions. My identity is in Christ.”
Sanchez returned to AGT’s 20th season and stunned millions with her performances. Her audition of Benson Boone’s ‘Beautiful Things’ earned a Golden Buzzer from judge Sofía Vergara. This sent her straight to the live shows.
But here’s the thing that made this comeback even more special. She was nine months pregnant the entire time.
In the semifinals, she sang ‘Golden Hour.’ The judges gave her a standing ovation.
Overcoming Challenges with Faith
We know how difficult it is to perform while heavily pregnant. But God carried Sanchez through it all. “Every time I would sing that song, she was kicking. Big kicks,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez and her husband Rickie named their daughter Eliana, which means “my God has answered” in Hebrew. “We were trying for a baby and God answered, so I felt like the name was very fitting,” she said.
Her husband has been her rock through it all. He prayed with her before every rehearsal and show.
“Of course it would be meaningful to win,” Sanchez said before the finals. “But I’ve learned to just pray, ‘Lord, let Your will be done. Keep me mentally strong through this.'”
Sanchez’s Final Performance
In the finals, Sanchez sang Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ ‘Die With a Smile.’
Sanchez shared how her faith helped her thrive throughout the competition.
“My identity is in Christ, and that’s what has kept me steady through all of this,” Sanchez told The Christian Post. “No matter the outcome, I remind myself this is His will, not mine. That’s the only way I’ve been able to do this.”
Sanchez sees her platform as a chance to share her faith. “I feel like people nowadays aren’t afraid to share their faith,” she said. “There’s a breakthrough happening. I see it not just on stage but in my inner circle. It’s amazing.”
Sanchez Proclaims God’s Faithfulness
Sanchez hopes her story encourages others to trust God’s timing. “God’s timing is perfect timing,” she said. “If I hadn’t gone through the struggles, it wouldn’t mean as much as it does today. Now I just want to share that with others that the Lord is faithful.”
Her journey shows us that God can redeem our waiting seasons. When we root our identity in Christ instead of success, we find peace that holds us steady.
Sanchez waited 20 years to return to this stage, but she came back with something more valuable than talent. She came back with faith that anchors her soul no matter what happens.
