Woman Plays ‘Amazing Grace’ Without Touching the Instrument and It’s Mesmerizing

A musician plays one of the most beloved Christian hymns on an instrument she never once touches and the performance is unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

When I first watched this video I was completely baffled. I couldn’t see her touching anything at all but I could hear the beautiful melody of ‘Amazing Grace’. So I went and searched about this strange instrument and what I found was fascinating.

What Is a Theremin?

The theremin is one of the strangest instruments ever made. It was invented in the 1920s by a Russian physicist named Leon Theremin and it works unlike anything else in the world of music.

How Theremin Works?

One antenna sticks up vertically and controls the pitch. The other extends horizontally and controls the volume. The player moves their hands through the invisible electromagnetic fields surrounding these two antennas and the instrument responds. No strings. No keys. No contact at all. Just movement through the air.

The Song She Chose

The song Carolina Eyck chose was one of the most beloved Christian hymns of all time, ‘Amazing Grace.’ Written by John Newton in the early 1770s, the hymn has touched hearts for generations.

Newton wasn’t always a man of faith. He was a slave trader who had a powerful encounter with God and it changed everything about him. He wrote this hymn out of that experience and it has been speaking to people ever since.

The message is simple. God’s grace finds us no matter where we’ve been.

Who is Carolina Eyck?

Carolina Eyck is a German-born musician and composer and she is considered one of the world’s foremost theremin virtuosi. In the video she performs ‘Amazing Grace’ flawlessly on the instrument. Her hands never touch a thing, but the music coming out of the instrument is so soothing and beautiful.

It’s wonderful to see a beloved Christian hymn performed on such a unique instrument, and I hope we see more performances like this in the future.
