It breaks your heart to see how deeply an animal can love someone. For almost a year a sweet dog named Sadie has been doing the same heartbreaking routine every single day.
Sadie is a rescue who formed an incredible bond with her rescuer. Her owner was a mine inspector who traveled to different mines for work. One day he noticed a stray dog near a gate where somebody had dropped her off. She was terrified of everybody else but she would always come right up to him. He asked his wife Sarah if they could take her in. Sarah agreed and from that moment on the dog and her owner were inseparable.
Because a loyal dog waits for her owner no matter what, Sadie made it her daily job to greet him. Every evening she would wait in their driveway. She knew exactly what his truck looked and sounded like. She could actually hear his truck coming before she could even see it down the road.
You could see the joy on her face as she would run around the house to meet him where he backed his truck in. They would spend the rest of the evening together. Sarah noted “She liked all of us but he was her favorite.”
Sadly he went to the hospital in December 2025 and never made it back home. He passed away on December 4th. Hearing Sarah tell this story really brings tears to my eyes because dealing with loss is so hard on its own. Watching a dog grieving owner is a different kind of pain that just aches to witness.
We can find peace in our faith and know where our loved ones go but animals just feel the sudden absence. Sadie knows he is not inside the house. Instead she finds a spot outside every morning to look down the road waiting for deceased owner to somehow pull into the driveway.
If the weather is bad she sits up in their son’s room looking out the window at the empty driveway. Seeing this pet grieving for her owner is truly a difficult sight for the family. They have tried putting pieces of his clothing in the house so she can be near his scent but she just wants him back. Sarah shared a very painful truth when she said “It’s sad because you can’t explain to her that he’s not coming back.”
They recently brought a new puppy home to give Sadie something else to focus on. It has helped a bit but she always ends up back in the driveway. She refuses to leave the yard and does not enjoy car rides anymore. She just wants to be home in case he returns.
Sadie’s story stirs something deep in the spirit. Every morning she takes her post and keeps her eyes fixed on that road, and the Lord is using a little rescue dog to give us a gentle nudge in our spiritual life.
Jesus told us to stay ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour we do not expect. Sadie waits with no promise that her master will return, but we wait with a promise from the One who cannot lie. If a dog can stay that faithful on love alone, how much more should we keep our lamps trimmed and our hearts burning until that glorious day when the King of Kings comes back for His own!
