Doorbell Camera Catches 78-Year-Old Delivery Driver Struggling Up Porch Steps and Strangers Raise $1 Million to Help Him Retire

A 78-year-old man delivering Starbucks orders in Manchester, Tennessee never imagined a doorbell camera would catch him on the worst day of his week and move complete strangers to raise nearly $1 million so he could finally rest.

Many of us have seen elderly people still working long after others their age have settled into retirement. For some it is a choice. It keeps them busy and their minds sharp. But for others, every single shift is a struggle, worked through tired bodies and quiet hardship just to survive.

God sees every one of those long days. And sometimes He opens the eyes of a complete stranger to notice the dignity in an old man slowly climbing a porch step at a time.

Richard Pulley retired 13 years ago after a career selling insurance. But when his wife Brenda lost her job, he came out of retirement and began working DoorDash shifts — sometimes up to 12 hours a day.

“When you’re past your mid-70s, there’s not exactly a line of people waiting to hire you,” Brenda said. So the couple worked together. She drove. He delivered.

On March 10, homeowner Brittany Smith happened to check her Ring camera and saw Richard slowly making his way up her porch steps, gripping the handrail one step at a time. It stopped her cold.

“I was furious,” she said. “I know this poor old man is not bringing my very able daughter Starbucks.”

Smith tracked Richard down — he lived just five minutes away — and knocked on his door with a $200 tip. But the internet had bigger plans.

After she posted the video with the caption “Help me find this precious man!”, hundreds of thousands of messages flooded in asking her to start a GoFundMe. She launched “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again” the next morning.

Within five days, strangers had donated nearly $1 million.

“It’s just really difficult to believe that there’s that many people that are that generous to try to help us — people that don’t even know us,” Brenda said.

Richard is grateful, but says he still wants to deliver occasionally. “It’s important to do the best you can and help people,” he said. “If you help people and do right, you’ll succeed.”

Richard and Brenda have been married nearly 56 years. They built a life on hard work and quiet faithfulness — and the world noticed.

God sees what the world often overlooks. He saw Richard gripping that handrail, one step at a time, day after day. And when the time was right, He made sure someone else saw it too. That is how He works.

He meets our needs in ways we never expect, through people we have never met, in moments we never planned.

Richard just kept showing up. God took care of the rest.
