We all face scary moments in life. Some of us deal with sickness, others with accidents or loss. But when we trust God during our worst times, He shows up in amazing ways.

This young boy’s story proves that faith can help us overcome anything.

The Day Everything Changed

Jameson Reeder Jr. was having fun with his family at Looe Key Reef in the Florida Keys back in August 2022. The 10-year-old grabbed a GoPro camera and dove down to look for sea turtles and other sea life.

His parents and three siblings were enjoying the clear blue water nine miles from shore.

Then his father heard screaming.

A bull shark at least nine feet long had attacked Jameson. The damage was terrible. His father said the boy’s leg below the knee was gone. Only the main bone remained, covered with sharp teeth marks. All the muscle and flesh had been torn away.

“Once it attacked me, I didn’t think of anything else except what the heck is attacking me,” Jameson said. “It jerks my head back while it’s shaking me, and I see that it was a shark, and so I jerked my head back into place and I started screaming for help.”

God Sends Miraculous Help

What happened next shows how God works in emergencies. The fastest boat on the reef happened to be right there. The captain offered to race Jameson to shore. Then a nurse jumped out of the water onto their boat with a medical bag to help.

Jameson’s father couldn’t believe it. “You don’t expect to meet a nurse in the middle of the ocean,” he said.

But the biggest miracle was what his son believed. Even bleeding and hurt, Jameson trusted that “Jesus will save me.”

Jesus Appears to a Dying Boy

During the boat ride to shore, something incredible happened. Jameson was trying to stay awake when he saw a vision. He described seeing “a man on fire.” When the fire cleared, “it was actually Jesus.”

“And I just looked at him, and he looked at me. He didn’t say anything, but he just gave me the sense of peace,” Jameson said.

That peace gave him strength. He sang ‘Here I am to Worship’ all the way to shore to keep himself awake.

Fighting Back with Faith

Doctors couldn’t save Jameson’s leg. There wasn’t enough left to work with. The shark had made that decision for them.

Jameson spent three weeks in the hospital and had four surgeries. But just four days after the attack, he surprised everyone. He told his dad he wanted to go back to the reef.

“Dad, I don’t want the shark, this hospital, and my leg to be my worst nightmare. I want to face my fear and move forward,” he said.

New Life, Same Faith

Now 13, Jameson wears a prosthetic leg with a shark picture on it. He’s had six surgeries total and needs more as he grows. But that doesn’t slow him down.

He surfs, plays baseball, and does rock climbing. He plays guitar and sings. His mother says he puts on his prosthetic leg every morning “like nothing.”

“It’s like I was born again,” Jameson said. “I had to learn how to walk, run, jump, and all that stuff.”

Going Back to Face Fear

The family returned to the same reef on the one-year anniversary of the attack. Jameson went swimming again in those waters. His father watched as other sharks swam nearby, but his son jumped in anyway.

“The Lord gave me the strength to go back to the reef,” Jameson said.

Now the family wants to help others through their book called “Rescue at the Reef: The Miraculous True Story of a Little Boy with Big Faith.”

This kid faced something most adults couldn’t handle. But in the middle of that terrifying moment, he chose to worship God.

He sang praise songs while bleeding and fighting for his life.

Can we do the same during our own struggles? When sickness hits or we lose someone we love or money gets tight, can we still worship God?

Jameson shows us it’s possible. When we choose to trust God in our darkest moments, we find a peace and strength that nothing else can give us.
