Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist Dave Koz and his band turned a terrible flight delay into a joyful mini concert.
Dave Koz and his musicians were flying from St. Louis to Seattle on August 11. They were heading to their next shows for the Dave Koz & Friends Summer Horns Tour.
What should have been a simple direct flight became a nightmare. The plane had to land in Boise, Idaho because the flight crew ran out of work hours. Then the airplane had mechanical problems.
This was not the first time the band faced travel troubles on their tour. They had already canceled two shows because of travel issues.
“You could just feel the energy. Everybody was so frustrated,” Koz said.
A flight attendant named Charlene noticed the musicians had brought their instruments on board. She walked up to them with a simple request. She asked if they would play a song for all the upset passengers.
The band said yes. They pulled out their instruments right there in the airplane aisle. Koz and Marcus Anderson played their saxophones.
Jeff Bradshaw squeezed his big trombone between the airplane seats. They performed Stevie Wonder’s ‘You Haven’t Done Nothin’.’
Passengers started smiling. They swayed in their seats. Many pulled out their phones to record the special moment.
Anderson said it felt good to lift everyone’s spirits. The musicians never thought their little concert would go viral around the world.
“It was just doing something good for the people,” Anderson said.
“It just was right, and it brought everybody together in a way that was very special,” Koz said. “I’ll remember that moment for the rest of my life.”
The video reached millions of people online. Now Koz says they are known as “the plane guys.”
