There’s a video going around on social media that honestly just breaks your heart in the best way. It was taken right after an Army basic training graduation ceremony.

You can see soldiers celebrating, hugging their families, laughing — all that good stuff you’d expect after weeks of grueling training. But in the middle of all that, there was one soldier who didn’t have anybody.
No parents, no friends, nobody waiting for him. And I think that’s the part that really gets you, because you can almost feel how alone he must have felt standing there watching everyone else get their moment.
But then this woman — a mother-in-law of another soldier — she just spotted him. And she didn’t overthink it or hesitate or wonder whether it was appropriate. She walked right up to him and gave him a hug.
You can see in the clip how the young man just held on. He needed that. You could tell.
And that’s the thing about basic training — it’s brutal. It pushes you past every limit you thought you had. So when you finally graduate, you want someone there telling you they’re proud. This kid didn’t have that. Until she gave it to him.
We talk a lot about doing great things for God, about big missions and grand callings. But honestly? Sometimes it’s just a hug. Sometimes it’s noticing the one person in the room who looks like they’re barely holding it together and doing something about it. That’s ministry too.
So if nothing else, let this be our reminder. Keep your eyes open today. Someone around you is that soldier — standing alone, hoping somebody sees them. Be the person who does.
