Sometimes we wonder why we suffer so much. We pray about it, think about it over and over, asking God why He allows us to go through such pain.

But in His timing, He reveals the reason. He can use our deepest wounds to create our greatest ministries.

Peter Mutabazi’s life shows us how God molds us through suffering for His purpose.

Peter grew up on the streets of Uganda after running away from home at age 10 to escape abuse. “I was a street kid, abused and always seen as a nobody, but someone saw the best in me and changed my life,” he said.

Back then, he never thought he would become a father. He worried he might hurt children the same way he was hurt.

But God had different plans. Peter discovered foster care and realized this was his calling. He believes every child deserves to be seen, heard and known.

“Once you journey into foster care, it’s hard to go home and say life is going to be okay knowing there are so many children that are looking for a safe and loving home,” he explained.

Peter is unique among foster parents. As a single Black immigrant, he represents only 3% of all foster parents.

When he first went to licensing classes, people questioned him. They kept asking where his wife was. “Are you sure you’re in the right place?” they wondered.

This experience showed him that many people don’t know single men and single mothers can be foster parents.

Peter has welcomed children from every background into his home. “When kids come to me, they’re not looking for a white dad or a black dad. They’re just looking for someone who cares and loves them,” he said.

Peter shares his daily life as a foster dad with 868K followers on his Instagram account. He wants to encourage others to step up and help. There are nearly 11,000 North Carolina children in foster care.

“I am an African and I truly believe it takes a village to raise a child,” Peter said.
