With all the doom and gloom in the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, one Alabama high school principal brought much-needed laughter with a hilarious spin on the strict safety measures his school was taking at the time.
Dr. Quentin Lee, principal of Childersburg High School in Childersburg, Alabama, created a COVID-19 parody of Can’t Touch This, the hit song by M.C. Hammer.
He rewrote the lyrics to reflect the challenges of the pandemic, including lines like:
“COVID! Is stressing me, all the updates from the CDC. Lysol! Can’t be found, I’ve looked all around this town.”
At the time, Lee was entering his fourth year as principal. He often made funny videos to welcome students back to school, and that year was no different.
“The M.C. Hammer song just came to my mind, and you can’t listen to that song without being happy,” he said. “I ran the idea by several of my friends and they said I had to do it, that it was too funny, so I started writing down the lyrics.”
He worked with the school’s cheerleading coach and a few students to film a full music video for the parody.
Back in August 2020, students were starting the school year either virtually or in person. The school operated at 50% capacity, rotating which students were on campus each day.
Lee hoped the video would make students laugh and feel more excited about returning to school, even with all the changes.
