Man Once Lost in Addiction Sings Moving Song ‘Come Out Lazarus’

Stephen McWhirter sings his moving original song ‘Come Out Lazarus.’ He nearly lost his life to addiction, but God called him out of the grave and made him new.

There are seasons in life where we genuinely believe it is over. Not just hard. Over. We have all had that moment where the silence feels final and the dark feels permanent.

We stop expecting anything to change because, honestly, what could possibly change it? And maybe that is exactly where Stephen was before God found him. Because the same man who stood buried in addiction is now standing on a stage, singing about resurrection.

‘Come Out Lazarus’ is not a polished worship song performed by someone who has only read about suffering. Stephen wrote it from inside the tomb.

The song opens with grief, real grief, the kind you feel when someone you love is just gone. And then something shifts.

The voice of Christ breaks in, commanding the dead to come out. Just listening to that transition is almost too much to take in. Because we know what it feels like to be the one in the dark, don’t we? We know what it costs to believe that voice is still speaking to us.

Stephen spent years in a cocaine addiction that could have been his end. And yet. God walked into that darkness and called him out by name. He is now in ministry. He is leading people in worship.

The same man who had nothing left is now pointing others back to life. When was the last time we let that actually land on us? That God does not wait for us to clean ourselves up before He comes looking?

The tomb you are sitting in right now is not the end of your story. Let’s pray together today and ask Him to speak into whatever feels dead in us. He is still calling names.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

“[Folly of the Godless, and God’s Final Triumph] To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.”
