Steve Carell turned Northwestern University’s graduation into a dance party that nobody will ever forget.
Most of us remember our own graduation day. We listened to speech after speech and waited for our names to be called. But how many of us actually remember what the speaker said?
Steve Carell made sure these Northwestern graduates would never forget their big day by doing something completely unexpected.
The beloved actor from ‘The Office’ spoke to Northwestern’s graduating class on June 15 at Chicago’s United Center.
The main subject of his entire speech was about kindness. “Today, I’d like to talk about something quite simple, something that is important to me and something that I believe we need more of in the world,” Carell said. “My topic this morning is kindness.”
Then something amazing happened. Carell stopped his speech and asked everyone to stand up. He called it the “mid-commencement address dance break.” The song ‘That’s Not My Name’ by the Ting Tings started playing.
Carell began dancing on stage with Dean E. Patrick Johnson. Then he ran into the crowd of graduates. He danced through the aisles and gave high-fives to students.
Carell then shared a powerful message, “Kindness is not a weakness; it is a potent strength. The best way to see and understand another human being is to listen. To listen is to show respect.”
Carell also made a Father’s Day joke since the ceremony happened on that special day. “Happy Father’s Day,” he said. “I’m sorry that this celebration of your child has ruined your special day.”
