‘God Is Our Number One Priority’: Mom’s Powerful Response After Losing Everything in a Fire

A family vacation to Colorado turned into a total nightmare when a sudden house fire destroyed a Texas home, but the owners made a miraculous discovery in the ashes.

Amy and Steven McMillan took their young son on a Father’s Day trip to Durango, Colorado. They were having a wonderful time riding the scenic trains and going ziplining together.

Then on Tuesday afternoon around 3:30 PM, Amy saw that her home security cameras suddenly cut off. Shortly after, the phone calls started coming in. It was the news no homeowner ever wants to hear: their house was on fire.

By the time they rushed back home, everything they owned was gone. The house was completely destroyed. They believe an electrical issue in a back bedroom started the fire.

Sadly, some of their animal family members did not make it. A mother cat and her four young kittens died in the fire. But God spared their other pets, including their senior Dalmatian named Rocky who miraculously broke free from his cage in the front yard and escaped just in time.

While they were digging through the hot ashes, they found something that truly felt like a miracle. Three of their family Bibles were sitting in the ruins. They were wet from the fire hoses and covered in black soot, but they were completely whole.

Amy looked at the Bibles and realized what God was telling them. She said, “It’s just ironic that the important things survived and the material objects were destroyed”.

The family did not have any home insurance when the fire happened, so they are staying at a local inn while they figure out how to rebuild. That is going to be a very long and hard road for them.

But Amy is keeping her eyes on God and has a beautiful attitude about the future. She shared with everyone, “God is our number one priority. He’s all that we need. We don’t need a house. We don’t need material things. As long as we’re all together, then that’s all that really matters”.

I am so deeply moved by Amy’s words because they lost literally everything in that fire. That is exactly the kind of moment when most of us struggle just to stand on our faith. But it is clear that this family built their lives on the solid rock of Jesus Christ so absolutely nothing can shake their foundation.

Everything we build on this earth with our own hands will eventually pass away, but the only thing that is truly permanent is our home in eternity with Jesus. So instead of wearing yourself out chasing temporary things, focus all your energy on strengthening your relationship with the Lord.

When the hard trials of life come knocking on your door, we should all pray to have that same bold faith to look at the wreckage and declare that Jesus Christ is our number one priority.

It reminds me of what the apostle Paul said in the Bible when he wrote that we must fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

“while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18.
