It is not every day you see an eight-year-old taking charge of a stage full of teenagers. But that is exactly what happened at the International Bluegrass Music Association gathering when a little boy named Nash Grier picked up his fiddle.
Nash is an eight-year-old fiddle prodigy from Tennessee and he already plays like he has decades of experience. He was performing for the IBMA Kids on Bluegrass program with the Indigo Band.
The group includes some heavy hitters for their age. You have 15-year-old Izaak Atlas Schwartz from Pennsylvania on the banjo. He has been picking up awards and playing traditional Appalachian music for years. Then there is 16-year-old Grace Dickerhofe on the upright bass from Arizona and 13-year-old Sam Schoonover on guitar from Oklahoma. Rounding out the group is 14-year-old Orson Cornett on mandolin, all the way from North Carolina. They are all accomplished musicians delivering a traditional, fast-paced bluegrass fiddle performance.
Playing bluegrass at this level is incredibly difficult. You have to keep perfect time while playing at breakneck speeds and the fiddle requires precise finger placement just to stay in tune. Most adults spend a lifetime trying to get that right. But little Nash just steps right up and leads the whole group.
The instrumental song they are playing is a classic mountain tune meant to get people out of their seats. The crowd and the internet absolutely loved it. People in the comments noticed how mature he plays for an eight-year-old. He keeps a steady professional rhythm throughout the entire three minute performance without missing a single beat.
When the song finally ends, he just gives a quick thank you to the cheering crowd and walks off.
It’s not every day we see a young person doing something exceptional. I am praising God for this child and praying for him to have a brighter future. May we all try to use our God-given talents to bring glory to Him and spread joy to the people around us.
