A dad in California saved his 13-year-old son’s life with one perfectly timed Heimlich maneuver after a piece of hard candy got stuck in the boy’s throat.

A Normal Day That Almost Wasn’t
It was just a regular afternoon at the Mackey house near Sacramento. Evan, 13, grabbed a big lemon hard candy and popped it in his mouth. He took a drink of water and that’s when everything went wrong.
The candy lodged in his throat and he couldn’t breathe or even speak to tell his parents what was happening. If you’ve ever watched someone choke even for a few seconds you know that fear. It takes over the whole room.
Mom Saw It First
Elizabeth Mackey noticed right away something was off. Her son was struggling and she knew he needed help fast.
“I immediately noticed he was choking and then my brain thought dad can save him much faster than I can,” she said. And honestly that’s such a real moment. She didn’t freeze. She assessed the situation and got Joe involved because she knew he could get to Evan quicker. That kind of clarity in a crisis is something only God gives you.
Dad Didn’t Think Twice
Joe Mackey just moved. No hesitation no second guessing. “Didn’t think. Grabbed him. One good thrust. It worked,” he said.
The home camera caught the whole thing. You can actually see the candy go flying across the room. And here’s the thing that gets me. Joe had never done the Heimlich maneuver before. Not once. He just knew what to do in that moment and he did it.
The Relief Was Immediate
The second that candy came out Elizabeth’s voice says it all. “You’re not ever eating those again,” she told Evan. Every parent felt that one right there. She also said “It’s always been my biggest fear of one of my kids choking.” And you could hear it in her voice the weight of what almost happened.
Evan described the candy as “one of those big like probably quarter size lemon hard candies.” So we’re not talking about a small piece. This was a real obstruction and it could have ended very differently.
The Candy Is Gone
Elizabeth didn’t wait around. She threw out every single piece of that candy. No debate no second chances. “Oh no. I threw them all away instantly,” she said. And I mean who wouldn’t. After something like that you’re not keeping those around.
God Was in That Room
So here’s what I keep coming back to. Joe had never performed that maneuver before. Elizabeth had the clarity to call on him immediately.
Evan survived without any injury. You can call that luck if you want, but we know better. God was in that living room. He guided Joe’s hands and He gave Elizabeth the presence of mind to act fast. That’s how He works.
Let this story be a reminder for all of us. Learn the Heimlich maneuver. Learn CPR. Learn basic first aid. God gives us the tools but we have to be willing to pick them up.
Even if we know everything, we may never know how we would respond in such a crucial situation especially when it’s a family member. Most of us would freeze and wouldn’t even be able to think of what to do.
That’s why we should trust God in all our ways. He is right there with you. He will give us the wisdom and strength to use the skills we learned in the right way.
The Mackey family will never forget that and honestly neither should we.
“For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.” — Psalm 91:11 (NKJV)
