If you have ever owned a dog you already know that they are family. We would go to any length to protect them. Losing one is heartbreaking. So when a teen in Newport Beach, California, spotted a dog struggling in the water he didn’t wait for its owner. He jumped in himself and brought that dog safely back to shore.

On June 18, a 15-year-old named Mateo Akerman was hanging out with friends near Park and Jade Avenues on Balboa Island in Newport Beach when they spotted a dog named George wandering close to traffic.

Before long George made his way into the water and it became clear very quickly that he was not going to make it back to shore on his own.

Mateo did not stop to think too long about it. He jumped in. He swam out to George and tried to guide the dog back to land but George was too tired to keep swimming. So Mateo just carried him.

“I carried him back to shore” he told KTLA and the video shows exactly that. You can see George struggling in the water and then Mateo reaching him and bringing him in.

Once they were back on land the group of friends wrapped George in a towel to warm him up. They found a phone number on his collar and called his owner. Then they stayed right there with George until his family came to get him. They just waited and made sure that dog was safe.
