Two teens in Satsuma, Alabama are being hailed as heroes for helping find a missing 77-year-old woman with dementia.
It all started on a Wednesday morning when Kathryn Whitney went missing. Her family must have been worried sick about her. Satsuma police officers were out searching the neighborhoods trying to track her down.
While riding along 7th Street, officers spotted two boys named Dalton Medley and Collin Carrell riding their bicycles. The police told them about Kathryn and asked them to keep an eye out.
Most kids might just go on with their day, but these two actually watched closely. A short while later, they rode past a house nearby and noticed an elderly woman sitting quietly in a rocking chair on someone’s back patio.
Dalton and Collin did not just ignore it or ride away. They stopped their bikes and walked over to talk with her. Once they realized she was indeed the missing woman they called the police right away.
Ring doorbell footage from the home later showed she had been sitting on that porch for about an hour and a half before anyone found her. I can only imagine how thankful her family felt when they got that call.
Thanks to the quick thinking of these two teenagers Kathryn was returned home safe and healthy. It is so heartening to see young people stepping up and caring for the elderly in their neighborhood like this. These two boys really deserve all the praise they are getting.
I truly appreciate the officers for trusting them and giving them a chance to help. There are many young people in our neighborhood who have great potential just waiting to be seen.
When we include them and show confidence in their abilities, they become a powerful blessing in our communities and neighborhoods.
