A legendary musician’s trumpet stopped working during the national anthem, and what he did next left the entire crowd on their feet.
Dr. Jesse McGuire is a 68-year-old musician who served as the lead trumpeter for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. He has played for three US presidents. He is famous for being the good luck charm for the Arizona Diamondbacks during their 2001 championship run against the New York Yankees. The team loves him so much that they even gave him his own World Series ring. He was invited back on September 19 to celebrate 25 years since that amazing victory.
He stood right there on the field to play ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ but his trusty horn just stopped working in the middle of the song. He later said he had never missed that high note in 40 years of playing and felt his whole reputation was on the line.
Instead of giving up, he lifted the microphone and started belting out the words. Hearing his deep powerful voice fill the stadium gave me chills. The crowd cheered him on and then sang along with him as a large American flag waved proudly in the outfield.
Later in the seventh inning Dr. McGuire came back out to perform ‘God Bless America’. He chose to sing this one too and he completely nailed it. Irving Berlin wrote this timeless song back in 1918 and it serves as a beautiful prayer asking for God’s guidance and blessing over our nation. It is a song that brings us all together to seek the Lord’s protection for our home.
The Diamondbacks ultimately secured a 5-3 victory over the Yankees to keep their playoff hopes moving forward.
Dr. McGuire faced a situation that most of us can’t even imagine happening before thousands of people. But praise the Lord, he did not lose heart or shrink back in shame! He pressed forward with hope, lifted his voice and turned a quick trial into a powerful moment that touched thousands.
Many times when a small setback comes in our way, we are quick to accept defeat. But is that how God wants us to respond? In the Bible, we can see even the strongest people of faith had many setbacks in their lives. But they didn’t let those trials define their future. They trusted in God, relied on His strength and witnessed how He turned those setbacks into a blessing.
Look at Joseph when his brothers betrayed him and sold him into slavery, and later when he was thrown into an Egyptian prison cell through a false accusation. Every earthly plan he had was completely shattered and he faced years of unfair hardship. Still he never let bitterness or trials break his trust in the Lord. He kept walking in integrity and God ultimately turned that deep pit of trial into a position of incredible blessing that saved nations.
We are called to carry that same faith in our lives when our plans are shaken. Even when earthly securities fail and the road gets difficult, His steadfast love remains our true anchor. Let us rest secure in His strength and trust that He holds our tomorrow.
