A tangled pelican knocked on the door of marine biologists in Panama City, Florida and received the help it needed.
Honestly when I first read this story I could hardly believe it. We know God built every creature with a strong instinct to survive but seeing a wild bird seek out human help is just remarkable.
The whole situation started on a regular workday at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration office in Florida. The team of marine biologists was busy working inside when they heard a tapping sound on the entrance door. They walked over to check the noise and found a massive pelican sitting right on the stoop. The poor creature had heavy fishing line wrapped tightly around its body and a sharp fishing hook stuck right into its wing.
Discarded fishing gear creates terrible problems for coastal wildlife in Florida every single day. This clever bird somehow waddled right to the door of the exact people who had the knowledge and tools to save it.
The scientists quickly brought the pelican inside the facility and got to work. One worker held the bird securely so it would not panic while another used tools to cut the line and pull out the hook.
What amazed the entire team was how remarkably calm and patient the pelican stayed throughout the whole procedure. It seemed to realize these people were trying to help it.
After removing the line and hook, the biologists checked the bird over carefully to make sure it was fully okay. Once they confirmed it was healthy and uninjured, they released it back into the sky.
Scripture tells us in Psalm 24 that the earth is the Lord’s and everything in it! God placed us here as caretakers to love and guard what He made, not to harm it with our trash or carelessness. So think before you act because every piece of fishing line or litter we throw away affects God’s beautiful ecosystems.
Let us be good stewards of His creation and honor Him by protecting the marvelous work of His hands. Please pray for our coastal wildlife and ask the Lord to give us wisdom to make the right decisions that preserve His creation for generations to come.
