Researchers drilling deep at the Durupinar site near Mount Ararat recently uncovered shocking new evidence that strongly backs up the Bible’s account of Noah’s Ark.
Genesis is widely known as the most debated book in the Bible but God is clearly bringing it into the light right now. It honestly amazes me how God preserves evidence of His truth right under our feet for thousands of years. We read the Genesis flood story and trust it completely but seeing physical clues uncovered in our lifetime brings a whole new level of excitement. This Mount Ararat boat shape has been debated for decades. Some people thought it was just a strange rock but new digging at the Durupinar formation is changing minds fast and I am so thrilled to follow their progress.
A Site That Has Puzzled People for Decades
The Durupinar formation was first identified in 1959, when Turkish army captain İlhan Durupinar spotted its unusual shape in aerial photographs taken during a NATO survey flight. And the site was later named after him. It stretches roughly 538 feet and sits in the region where the Bible says the ark came to rest “on the mountains of Ararat” (Genesis 8:4).
In 1996, geologist Lorence Gene Collins and former ark researcher David Franklin Fasold called it “a natural rock structure.” Critics have held that view ever since.
For decades, the area around Mount Ararat was a restricted military zone near the borders of Iran and Armenia. The Turkish government completely banned heavy machinery and digging to protect the landscape. Plus big academic groups refused to pay for research after those 1996 critics brushed the site off.
It was only recently when the research team finally partnered with local Turkish universities that the government gave them official permits to drill. It really feels like God was protecting the site until the perfect time.
The Noah’s Ark Research Project teamed up with Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University for their first full field season of deep core drilling. They drilled down to 60 feet across more than 12 different spots. They gathered over 300 soil samples and their findings are proving the critics were wrong.
Andrew Jones is the vice president of the project and his words really stuck with me. “They’ve criticized in the past, saying all those scans you can interpret different ways, ‘This is a solid mass of rock, a syncline or a block of bedrock’… Well, we’ve core drilled… over 12 locations. We did not find bedrock at all.”
The Surprising Soil Results
When I read about what they actually pulled out of the ground it gave me chills. Instead of hitting limestone they hit deep deposits of rich black soil. “When we drilled into the formation this year for the first time, we did not encounter any solid block of rock, of limestone, [or] of any type of a rock… We were hitting mainly soil,” Jones explained.
Early lab tests showed this dirt has three times more organic matter than the ground around it. It also has 38 percent more potassium and very clear pH differences. This is exactly what you would expect to find where massive amounts of wood decayed over many centuries. As Jones put it “Noah’s Ark was a giant wooden boat, according to the Bible.”
Recent Findings That Support The Ark
The deeper these experts look the more evidence piles up. Here are the most important findings from the site so far:
- The boat shaped formation is exactly 85 feet wide and 515 feet long which matches the exact dimensions given in Genesis.
- Advanced ground penetrating radar and Bakhtar Radar reveal chambers, corridors, organized patterns and perfect right angles hidden beneath the surface.
- Researchers found 26 drogue stones in the area which ancient ships used as drag anchors to stop from capsizing in chaotic seas.
- The high altitude region is covered in marine fossils, sand dollars and sea shells and some of those shells are not even fossilized yet.
What Comes Next
The researchers are now working with Sivas University and Ankara University to finish the lab work. “In archaeology, you deal with probabilities, and we’re inching towards where we believe we will have confirmation this winter after our soil analysis is done with Sivas University, who’s our partner in this. We still have the lab work to do… And I hope everyone can follow along and see what we find.”
These incredible findings at Mount Ararat are such a powerful shout to a doubting world! For years skeptics laughed off the Genesis account, but as technology progresses we are witnessing discoveries that line up exactly with what the Bible told us thousands of years ago.
God is clearly working through this to open the eyes of many people and prepare them for His return.
