Two teenage brothers fishing near a retention pond in Carmel, Indiana instantly dropped their poles and jumped into the water to save a drowning grandmother and two toddlers trapped inside a submerged stroller on Monday morning.

Maddox Larger is 15 and his brother Grant is 14. They were just out fishing behind Fernleaf Way when Maddox saw something terrifying out of the corner of his eye. A stroller rolled down a steep embankment and plunged straight into the water.
Maddox heard the grandmother scream and ran over. When the boys got to the other side they found the grandmother struggling in the water. She had a four-year-old strapped to her back and neither of them knew how to swim.
Maddox quickly called 911 and handed his phone to his brother. Then he jumped in. “I jumped in the water and I grabbed them and pulled them out as quickly as possible,” Maddox said. “Even though it may have been a little bit of a struggle. It still worked out.”
Most teenagers would freeze in a moment like that. He saw the danger and walked straight toward it anyway.
But the teen brothers rescue toddlers mission was not over. The stroller was upside down in the pond with a two-year-old still clipped inside. The grandmother pointed at the submerged stroller.
“The grandma pointed at the stroller, and there was a baby clipped inside still, and my brother took her out, and she was not breathing, so he leaned her back and patted her on the back, and she spit out water,” Grant said.
Grant knew exactly what to do when he pulled the baby from the water and she wasn’t breathing.
First responders had a hard time finding the scene because of an address mixup but by the time they arrived the brothers had already gotten everyone onto dry land safely.
The boys don’t even think they did anything special and Grant said anybody else would have done the same thing. Maddox said “It just happened. I just had to get them out.” Their mother Lindsay said “You’re never too young to do something to help out your neighbor.”
God puts us in the right place at the exact moment we need to be there. I believe God saw a helpless grandma doing everything she could to save her grandkids, and He gave these boys the courage and wisdom to act during such a critical moment to save those precious lives.
I can’t even imagine how this could have turned out if they were not there that morning. God is watching over us. It’s not our own strength that keeps us from falling, it’s only His mercy that sustains us every single day. May we all have that same selfless heart these boys showed, ready to step in for someone in need.
“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22–23 (NKJV)
