Deaf Owner Adopts Deaf Dog And Teaches Him Sign Language Commands

Emerson is a deaf and visually impaired dog, but has got a new lease of life thanks to his new owner who is also deaf.

Nick Abbot, and Emerson use sign language to communicate and make an incredible pair.

Nick, from Maine, U.S., adopted Emerson as a 12-week-old puppy after reading a Facebook post about him. The post read: ‘Our Sweet boy Emerson is still looking for his forever home. All of his siblings have been adopted and he is left wondering why no one wants to give him a forever home.’

The post further read, ‘He wants everyone to know that even though he may be deaf, he is still an AMAZING little pup with SOO much love to give! All he wants in the whole wide world is to be someones companion! He is not an overly needy pup, he is content snuggling on the couch with you, or finding the perfect sunny spot on the floor to relax in.’

He could not eat or drink and was having seizures, he then started developing the Parvo virus, but was being cared for by his rescuers. Due to his ill health, he was the only one that was not adopted as all his brothers and sisters were already adopted.

Nick said: ‘He came straight to me at the door and sat right away at my feet and stayed there. So you can tell he kind of picked me. And I knew right then and there that we would get along and understand each other pretty good.’

They may not be able to hear each other, but Nick and Emerson can still communicate, Emerson sits when Nick signs the letter ‘S’ and he lies down on the floor when he signs a straight line.

Nick added: ‘The bond that we have is awesome. We understand each other very well. I’d like to think it was meant to be. He’s special.’
