Eleven passengers on a small plane survived a crash into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida on after losing engine power in heavy storms.

Olympia Outten, 48 years old, was flying back to Freeport in the Bahamas with her niece and two sons on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. They had been visiting family in Marsh Harbour and were heading home to vote in the prime minister election.
About 20 minutes into the flight the pilot told everyone they’d be reaching Freeport soon. But when that time passed and there was no Freeport in sight he radioed for help. Then the storms came rolling in heavy and the propeller just stopped moving. Communication went dead.
The pilot had no choice but to bring the plane down into the ocean, eight miles off the coast of Melbourne, Florida. The plane hit the water flipped over and started sinking.
“All I Saw Was Dark Water”
Outten said she was terrified. “All I saw was dark water around us,” she recalled. And here’s the thing she can’t even swim. Her niece was already out on the wing calling to her. “She said, swim. I said, I can’t swim. She said, you have to throw yourself in the water and flap your foot.”
So she did. And her niece grabbed her hand and pulled her onto the wing.
They eventually got into an orange raft but water was getting inside so they had to split into groups. For five hours they floated out there with no way to reach anyone.
Before the plane went under it sent out a distress signal. Then the Coast Guard and the 920th Rescue Wing showed up.
“I jumped for joy. All my heart, everything. I jumped for joy,” Outten said.
She Knew Exactly Who Saved Them
Outten didn’t credit luck. She didn’t call it a coincidence. She went straight to God. “The best thing to do is pray,” she said.
And honestly she’s right. When you’re sitting in dark water and you can’t swim and the plane you were just on is sinking beneath you what else can you do. You call on the name of Jesus.
“For 11 people to live on a craft, all 11, that’s a miracle,” Outten said.
All 11 passengers had injuries. Broken bones, lacerations, blunt force trauma. But every single one survived. Nine made it back to Freeport.
Outten and her niece stayed at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne until Thursday before being discharged. She also called the pilot a hero and thanked every agency that helped rescue them.
God Is Still in the Rescue Business
We don’t always understand why hard things happen. But we do know who shows up in the middle of them. Eleven people went into the ocean that night and eleven people came back. That’s not luck. That’s not coincidence. That is the hand of God.
So wherever you are today whatever storm you might be facing just remember this. He is with you.
Please pray for the full recovery of every survivor and for their families back home in the Bahamas.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.” — Isaiah 43:2 (NKJV)
