Salesman Prays With Widow Battling Kidney Failure and Returns With a Tear-Jerking Surprise

A door-to-door salesman showed up at a Texas woman’s home right after she got back from the hospital and what happened next was something only God could set up.

Let’s be real most of us see a salesperson at the door and we’re already thinking of an excuse to close it. We’ve all done it.

But for one woman in Keller, Texas that knock came at a moment when she needed someone to just stop and talk to her. And God sent this particular young man to her doorstep.

A Knock That Changed Everything

Caleb Killough is a home improvement specialist. He knocks on doors for a living. But when he arrived at Melinda Potosky’s home in Keller, Texas a couple of weeks ago something stopped him in his tracks.

“There was something in her eyes,” Killough said. “She reminded me of my Gammy. She’s no longer with us.”

Potosky had just come home from the hospital. She was dealing with kidney failure. She had also recently lost her husband. And now here’s this young man standing on her porch asking about home repairs.

But the conversation didn’t stay about windows and siding.

When the Conversation Got Real

What started as a regular sales visit turned into something way deeper. Potosky opened up about her health and it shook Killough because he had been through something similar.

“It really impacted me because my father actually had a double lung transplant back six years ago,” he said. “I thought I was going to lose my father. So very emotional.”

He asked if she needed a transplant and she told him doctors are still monitoring her condition. He shared that he was engaged. She shared about losing her husband. Two people who had no reason to connect suddenly found themselves standing in a doorway talking about the hardest parts of life.

And honestly that’s how God works. He doesn’t always send help through the people you expect.

A Prayer on the Doorstep

Killough felt led to pray with her right there. And he did.

“Lord, let her know that she is loved,” he prayed. “And she’s always got a shoulder to cry on.”

A 30 year old salesman praying over a woman he just met. That’s not something you see every day but it’s exactly the kind of thing that reminds you the Holy Spirit is still moving through people.

The Surprise That Brought Her to Tears

Potosky reached out to Killough’s company Texas Home Improvement to tell them how much his visit meant to her. And the following Monday he came back with news she never expected.

His company would remodel her home for free.

“He was the most delightful young man I’ve ever encountered,” Potosky said. “I think I’m going to invite him to be my grandson.”

You can just feel the joy in that. After everything she’s been through, losing her husband, dealing with kidney failure, being alone. God sent her someone who didn’t just offer words but showed up with action.

God Still Sends People

We don’t always recognize the moments when God is moving. Sometimes it looks like an interruption. Sometimes it looks like a salesman at your front door on a random afternoon. But God knows what He’s doing and He knows who to send.

So if you’re going through something hard right now just hold on. Help might show up in the most unexpected way. And if you’re in a position to be that person for someone else don’t hold back. Pray with them. Show up for them. You never know what someone is carrying behind their front door.

Let’s keep Melinda in our prayers as she continues to deal with kidney failure and trust that the same God who sent Caleb to her door will keep walking with her through every step of this journey.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

Verse of the Day

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
