The hymn was written by J Lincoln Hall (1866-1930). The words are taken from the Bible from Luke 10:39, ‘She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying.’

Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
Oh, what words I hear Him say!
Happy place! so near, so precious!
May it find me there each day;
Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
I would look upon the past;
For His love has been so gracious,
It has won my heart at last.

It was a common thing for disciples to sit at the feet of their master at that time, and as Mary and Martha were followers of Jesus, they would sit at his feet and listen to his teaching. But one day when Jesus entered the house of Mary, Martha and Lazarus, Mary chose to sit still at Jesus’ feet while Martha was all caught up with her work and did not have time to sit at Jesus’ feet.

Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
Where can mortal be more blest?
There I lay my sins and sorrows,
And, when weary, find sweet rest;
Sitting at the feet of Jesus,
There I love to weep and pray;
While I from His fullness gather
Grace and comfort every day.

Martha instead of realizing her mistake, starts to complain to Jesus and asks him if he does not care that Mary has left her to do all the housework by herself and to tell her to help with the work. But, Jesus answers her saying, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed–or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Bless me, O my Savior, bless me,
As *I sit low at Thy feet; [*I’m waiting]
Oh, look down in love upon me,
Let me see Thy face so sweet;
Give me, Lord, the mind of Jesus,
Keep me holy as He is;
May I prove I’ve been with Jesus,
Who is all my righteousness.

Today as Fountainview Academy singers sing this deep and meaningful song, we are reminded of the words of Jesus about sitting at His Feet as it is the most important thing to do in our lives. We should not be all caught up with work that we fail to have a relationship with our Master.
