After five years in a coma, a woman miraculously wakes to laughter, thanks to her mother’s love and a simple joke.
In the fall of 2017, Jennifer Flewellen’s routine morning drive turned tragic. Moments after she had dropped her young sons at school, she lost consciousness and crashed into pole.
Her mother, Peggy Means, received the life-altering call while at work. Flewellen, then 35, was in serious condition. She was placed in a medically induced coma. The prognosis was bleak. Doctors doubted her survival and suggested ending life support. Means firmly declined, rooted in her faith. “I said, ‘No, it’s in God’s hands,'” she proclaimed, choosing hope over despair.
Peggy’s faith was tested time and again. She recalled a moment when a respiratory nurse doubted Jennifer’s recovery, saying she would only worsen. Peggy’s response was firm and protective. “Don’t you ever say that to me again, and never say it around my daughter,” she insisted. In her heart, Peggy believed Jennifer’s spirit was still vibrant, urging her to fight negativity at every turn.
Over the years, Jennifer was transferred between facilities, each move orchestrated by Peggy in her quest for the best care. Despite her full-time job as an industrial sewer, Peggy made time to visit Jennifer every day. She brought life into Jennifer’s room, talking to her, holding spa days, and ensuring she felt loved and not forgotten.
The breakthrough came unexpectedly in August 2022. As Peggy shared a joke with Jennifer, she responded for the first time in 5 years, with a laugh. “Every dream came true. Today’s the day I said, ‘That door that was closed, that kept us apart, had just opened. We were back,'” Peggy shared.
Jennifer’s journey of recovery is filled with small victories, each celebrated by Peggy and her grandsons, who had grown up in their mother’s absence.
The joy of reuniting with her children and even becoming a grandmother added layers of happiness to their lives.
Peggy and Jennifer’s story is a testimony of God’s love and faithfulness. They encourage us to trust in God and love one another, even when we face the most challenging situations. They remind us that God can do the impossible, and that He answers our prayers in His perfect timing.
