This Teen Was Given 8 Months to Live But His Doctor Made a Promise and God Did the Rest

A teenage boy was told he had eight months to live after being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and his doctor made him a promise that kept him fighting all the way to graduation day.

God puts people in our lives for a reason. Sometimes we don’t see it right away but looking back it becomes so clear. That’s exactly what happened with Dylan Mwaniki and his doctor Dr. Mary Austin.

A Diagnosis That Shook an Entire Family

Dylan was just 14 years old and had finished eighth grade when doctors in Kansas City Missouri found a rare and aggressive cancer in his kidney. They called it renal medullary carcinoma. The family was told he had maybe a year at best.

A Friendship That God Planned

Dr. Austin was a pediatric cancer surgeon at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and she took Dylan’s case. She saw something in him right away. “I remember thinking he’s beating the odds” she said. So the two of them got to work.

Over time their relationship grew into something much deeper than doctor and patient. They bonded over running sports and a shared connection to Kenya. She had lunch with him and met his family. His mother Lucy said Austin checked on Dylan “just like a mom would.” Dylan himself calls her his second mom and his “partner in crime.”

A Promise That Gave Him a Reason to Fight

Then Austin made him a promise. She told him if he kept fighting and made it to graduation she would be there. His father Paul said that one promise changed everything. “He just decided he has the will to keep fighting” Paul said.

52 Weeks of Chemo and a Graduation Day Nobody Expected

Dylan went through 52 weeks of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. By September 2024 he was cancer-free. On May 17 he graduated from Kansas City Christian School.

Austin was working at Seattle Children’s Hospital in Washington by then which is 1500 miles away. She worked overnight rearranged her whole surgical schedule and caught an early morning flight. His parents kept it a secret until she walked in.

Dylan’s mother Luci said Austin was exhausted when she arrived. “She was dead tired. But she remembered her promise. There was no way she was missing that graduation.”

When Dylan spotted her the hug they shared said everything. “It was just pure joy” Dylan said. “That hug meant everything.”

Faith That Carried Them Through

The Mwaniki family held onto their Christian faith through every hard day. Luci said when Dylan was first diagnosed she called everyone she knew to pray. They refused to give up. “God can do the miraculous” she said. “And Dr. Austin stayed with us every step of the way.”

Dylan is now heading to the University of Arkansas to study computer engineering. “She truly saved my life” he said. And Austin said knowing Dylan has made her better too. “A better person. A better doctor just by knowing him.”

So here is what we take from this. God does not leave us alone in our hardest seasons. He places specific people in our lives to carry us through when we can barely carry ourselves.

Dylan did not just get a great doctor. He got someone God sent to walk every step of that painful road with him. And because of that grace he is alive today.

We all have people like that in our lives if we look closely enough. Let’s thank God for them and be that kind of person for someone else.
