Man with No Car and No Furniture Kept a Big Secret for His Town Until He Died

In the small town of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, a man known for his simplicity left behind a legacy that surprised everyone. Geoffrey Holt lived a life that seemed ordinary, yet he harbored a secret that would eventually benefit his entire community.

Secret millionaire Geoffrey Holt

Geoffrey Holt, a caretaker at a mobile home park, was a familiar sight in Hinsdale. He was often seen in his worn-out clothes, either riding his lawn mower, making a trip to the local store, or simply enjoying the passing scenery. Despite having taught driver’s education, Holt chose simpler means of transport, like his bicycle and eventually, his mower. His home was sparsely furnished, lacking even a TV or computer. Edwin “Smokey” Smith, Holt’s closest friend, observed, “He seemed to have what he wanted, but he didn’t want much.”

However, Holt’s death earlier this year revealed an astonishing truth: he was a multimillionaire. His will left $3.8 million to the town of Hinsdale for the benefit of education, health, recreation, and culture. “I don’t think anyone had any idea that he was that successful,” said Steve Diorio, chairperson of the town selectboard.

The donation is expected to have a significant impact on the community of 4,200, providing about $150,000 annually from interest. Kathryn Lynch, the town administrator, assured that Hinsdale would “utilize the money left very frugally as Mr. Holt did.”
