A nine-year-old girl born without most of her right arm found her inspiration when she spotted a soccer player with the same limb difference during the game.

Most of us have had that one person from our childhood who just made us believe. You know the one. Maybe it was a teacher who encouraged you when you felt like you were not good enough. Or maybe a friend who gave you that gentle pat on the shoulder right when you were about to give up.
And for 9-year-old Hayden Stine, her inspiration came from someone she had never met before. It happened on a soccer field when she looked up and saw someone who looked exactly like her doing the very thing she dreamed of doing.
The Game That Changed Everything
The Denver Summit FC lost their home opener at Mile High Stadium last month. The scoreboard said zero. But for Hayden Stine, that game gave her something no score could measure.
Hayden was born without most of her right arm. So when she saw Carson Pickett, number 16, running the field with that same limb difference, something just clicked.
She told the news she wants to be a professional player now because she saw Carson do it. It filled her with hope that she could too. That is the thing about role models. They don’t just inspire you. They show you what is actually possible. As Hayden puts it, they make you feel like you can do anything.
Her Confidence Went Through the Roof
Her parents saw the shift immediately. Her mom, Christina, said Hayden’s confidence didn’t just grow. It skyrocketed. It was there at school and it was there on the field. It was through the roof.
Hayden even went out and scored three times in practice right after. One game. One meeting. And this girl became a whole new version of herself.
But here is the part that really gets you. Carson Pickett admitted this meeting almost never happened. For years, she actually hid her arm in photos. She avoided talking about it. She didn’t want to be “the girl with one arm.” She just wanted to be the girl who plays soccer.
Then her mother stepped in and told her she was missing an opportunity. She was missing a purpose. And that changed everything for her. Carson later wrote that she realized this journey is a lot less about her and a lot more about the hearts she can touch along the way.
Now She Wants to Meet Everyone
Carson went from hiding to showing up for every kid and every family she can reach. She wants to meet everyone. And just this week, she surprised Hayden at her soccer practice. She isn’t just stopping at a one-time meeting either. She plans to stay in touch and help Hayden find her own purpose too.
When it comes to role models, it really does take one to be one. When Hayden was asked if she could be a role model herself one day, she didn’t even hesitate. She said, “Yes, I am up for it.”
“I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.” Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)
