A powerful tornado tore through a northwest Indiana town overnight and caused widespread damage, but one thing was still standing – a cross.

When unexpected things hit our lives it’s often a short Bible verse or a song or even a word from a friend that gives us the strength to keep going. But for one Indiana community walking through a hard time right now, they saw a powerful sign that gave them hope and reminded them that they’re not alone in it.
A Powerful Tornado Tears Through Merrillville
The damage in Merrillville was hard to look at. Poles snapped clean in half. Wires hanging down everywhere. Nearly 200 homes and buildings were damaged in the area. Trees and debris were scattered all across the streets.
A reporter on the scene said she had never seen anything like it.
But then she noticed something.
The One Thing Left Standing
Right there on the high school campus, surrounded by all that wreckage, was a cross. Still up. Still whole. Like the storm just went around it.
“What’s crazy is the one thing that remains standing right now,” she said. “I can’t believe that this cross is the one thing that’s standing right now.”
She called it a strong symbol, and said it was something people in the town were already talking about that morning.
So was it just chance? Maybe. But we know better than to think God doesn’t speak through moments like this.
What It Reminds Us
Even when everything else falls apart, the one thing that never leaves us is the love of God. Romans 8:38-39 tells us that nothing in all creation can separate us from that love. Not a storm. Not loss.
That cross standing in the middle of all that wreckage is a symbol of hope for this community. We have victory in Jesus.
No matter how bad your situation looks right now, look to Jesus. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8) and He is still standing even when everything around you isn’t.
Let’s keep praying for the families in Merrillville as they start to rebuild.
