Most of us see police officers giving out tickets, directing traffic or catching criminals. But what we don’t always see is the effort they put in almost every single day to save lives.

The number of 911 calls they receive in a day related to life-saving emergencies is more than we could ever imagine. They respond to the call and step in immediately not even knowing what’s waiting on the other side. And on the evening of May 31 two deputies in Greenville County stepped in and saved a baby’s life.

On the evening of May 31 deputies with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call that turned out to be far more than routine. When they arrived at the residential property they found a man holding a baby girl who wasn’t breathing.

Deputy Jordan Stevenson and Deputy Connor O’Shields didn’t hesitate. They took that child and immediately started working to bring her back.

One of the deputies used a bag valve mask to help the baby breathe while the other kept everything moving. At one point they carried her toward the patrol car still working on her still focused. And then someone on scene said those three words that broke the tension wide open. “There we go.”

The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office shared the rescue video on Facebook on June 9 and the response was overwhelming. The post said these deputies stood “between life and death” that evening and their “professionalism, quick thinking, and commitment to serving others made all the difference when seconds mattered most.”

That’s not just a compliment. That’s the truth of what happened.

We thank God for Deputy Stevenson and Deputy O’Shields and pray for His blessing over every first responder who answers a call without knowing what’s waiting on the other side.
